Drawing and Wrapping

Little Miss is really into drawing at the moment.  She is starting to establish a proper pencil grip and her drawing is developing rapidly.

One morning she was drawing away and decided to ‘fold’ her drawing up.  ’Wrapping’, she called it.  For the next twenty minutes she drew, then wrapped.  Sometimes her focus was on the drawing, other times it was a quick draw and then onto the wrapping.  I didn’t tell her she wasn’t allowed to use any more paper.  I didn’t tell her she shouldn’t screw up her lovely drawings.  I was on hand to pass her pieces of paper as she finished each one.

This was important work for her, it had real purpose which wasn’t necessarily obvious to the adult eye.  Little children are continually discovering how the world works and they need to be able to do that in their own way.  Even if it means using half a ream of paper.

  1. How sweet is her little wrapping song? So beautiful. I really like how you allowed her to do this. I think many would have stopped it because it was a ‘waste’ of paper. But she was genuinely folding and wrapping and not mindfully scrunching. You wouldn’t have known that had you stopped her and her play would have ended. She was very focussed on what she was doing. :)

    • Absolutely – I really believe in standing back and watching before wading in, even if they’re doing something you might think they ‘shouldn’t’ be doing. I think at this age there’s a reason for everything they do :)
